GL Assessment advises against practising for the CAT4, because practice can affect how reliable the scores are, and we make no claim that practice raises a score. Merlin Practice is for families who still want their child to see the question types and the timer first. Ask your school what it prefers.
- Step 01
Try the free taster
Two questions of every CAT4 type in about 12 minutes, then a profile across the four batteries. No card needed.
- Step 02
Learn each question type
Learning mode explains every answer step by step. Paper folding and hidden shapes animate so children can see why.
- Step 03
Practise with the timer
Short timed sets on a countdown clock, so the on-screen timer feels familiar.
The details
Matched to the level
Pick your child's year group and we suggest the usual CAT4 level, A to E. If the school has told you the level, choose that instead.
Explanations that show, not just tell
In learning mode there is no timer. Your child answers, checks, and sees the method and the common mistake. Paper-folding answers unfold step by step; hidden shapes are traced in the design.
Timing without pressure
Timed sets of 10 questions run on a countdown clock. Our pace is an estimate from GL Assessment's published section times, because it does not publish how many questions each section has.
Works on any screen
Answers can be chosen with a tap, a click or the keys 1 to 5, on a phone, tablet or computer. The CAT4 itself is usually taken on a computer or tablet.
A report parents can read in a minute
The parent report groups practice into the four CAT4 batteries and says, in plain English, which question types feel familiar and what to try next. It never shows invented scores or percentiles.
Children's privacy by default
Children need no account or email address. Practice pages carry no advertising or tracking.
