Quantitative reasoning

Number series

In number series, your child finds the rule in a row of numbers and picks the number that comes next.

What the questions look like

A row of numbers with the next one missing, and five possible next numbers.

In the digital test at Levels A to G this section lasts 8 minutes, with worked examples and untimed practice questions first.

What it measures

Spotting the pattern in a sequence, the same reasoning used in number analogies. It sits in the quantitative reasoning battery.

An original example at Level B. Choose an answer, then check it to see the explanation.

Question 1 of 1Learning mode: no timer

What number comes next in the series?

2643607794?

Keys 1 to 5 choose an answer. Enter continues.

How to approach it

  • Write the gaps between numbers. Do the gaps follow a pattern of their own?
  • Big jumps often mean multiplying rather than adding.
  • Two series can be woven together: look at every other number.

Common mistakes

  • Repeating the last gap without checking whether the gaps change.
  • Missing two series woven together.
  • Adding when the jumps show multiplying.
