Verbal reasoning

Verbal classification

In verbal classification, three words go together. Your child works out the link and picks the word that belongs with them.

What the questions look like

Three words in a row, and five words to choose from.

In the digital test at Levels A to G this section lasts 8 minutes, with worked examples and untimed practice questions first.

What it measures

Finding what words have in common. Vocabulary plays a part, which is why reading widely helps more than drilling. It sits in the verbal reasoning battery.

Question 1 of 1Learning mode: no timer

These three words go together. Which word belongs with them?

snowraindrizzle

Keys 1 to 5 choose an answer. Enter continues.

How to approach it

  • Name the group as exactly as you can: not 'animals' but 'animals that live in water'.
  • Some wrong answers are linked to one of the words but not to all three.
  • Unknown word? Rule out the ones you know first.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing a word linked to one of the three but not to all of them.
  • Naming the group too broadly, so two options seem to fit.
  • Guessing at an unfamiliar word instead of ruling out the known ones.
